Chapter 24

AS I PARK the vehicle in front of the office, another car pulls up beside me, drawing me from my thoughts. I look over and see Bingwen step out of the vehicle. He grabs his bag and a small plastic cup filled with yogurt, sucking on it as he rushes up the stairs. I sigh, and get out of the car, calling to him.

“Bingwen!”

“John, hey man. What is that?” he asks, referring to the box I am carrying from the trunk.

“Coffee, blueberry pie, and Discovery for the case.” I reply, walking towards him.

“Guessing you got all three from the same place, yeah?” he asks, raising an eyebrow.

“Kill it, Bingwen.” I reply.

“Come on, you can see it. She’s got the hots for you and you know it. Since day one, Lindsay likes you. I don’t know if enough time has passed for you, but you should really consider it. Won’t be half bad in my opinion. Come on man.”

I stop and glare at him. Bingwen is not a man who knows how to control his tongue. He does not have the right amount of emotional intelligence for a human, and sometimes, the things he says come off as rude, brash or insensitive. But that is just who he is, and he is not trying to hurt anyone. But they do hurt. I have just lost my wife and daughters, and I am not looking to get into anything of the sort. He sees the look on my face and gets the message, raising his hands in defeat.

“Why are you back?”

“Is Emily in?” He asks, opening the front door for me.

“Yeah, I’m here.” Emily replies, standing from her seat and walking over to me. She grabs the box and pie along with it and raises an eyebrow. “Lindsay?”

I nod and she chuckles. “Crazy how she can be so sweet in person, but once you get in court, she is a crazy ass devil.”

“She’s just doing her job, and she doesn’t know better. Much of the town doesn’t know better and it’s our job to make sure they understand that Camila isn’t responsible for all of this.”

“Well, that is exactly why I am here. I went around and did some digging and I got a little. I don’t know if it’s good news, but if Lindsay and her people get the same word I got, then we might have a bigger problem than we thought.”

I take a seat and sip on my coffee while Bingwen finishes the last of his yogurt. Emily sits next to me, ready for Bingwen to begin. The man clears his throat and looks at both of us. “Alright,” he pauses and reaches into his bag, grabs another pack of yogurt, rips it open and take a sip.

“How do you use the bathroom, Bingwen?” Emily asks.

“Similar to the way everyone else does it. Alright, listen. I realized that the police have been especially hard on the homeless since the murder of Michael Pierce. Went to a soup kitchen and to shelter and I realized that they have been getting a lot of attention.
